Scandinavian Coaches – Mats Björkman đŸŽ€

đŸ‡©đŸ‡° 🇾đŸ‡Ș

Mats Björkman, called Bjöcke in Sweden is a coach with a long experience with Scandinavian Volleyball. He started in Sweden and was part of the Junior National Team before he moved to Denmark. In Denmark Mats has become a power in the youth and junior programs in the Danish Federation and with him coaching the youth National Teams for years and at the Volleyball School in Ikast
We are happy that Mats wanted to share little of his experience and thoughts

Who is Mats Björkman?
– I am 58 years old, I live in Ikast, Denmark together with my wife Else and we have a grown up daughter Emma, who soon will be done with her aim to be a Midwife

Where did you get your volleyball interest from?
-I started as a schoolboy back in 1976 in Örnsköldsvik. We got a new teacher from Gothenburg who started a volley group and it seems to be fun. We where a bunch of friends that started together – pretty much like everyone else in this sport 😊

Why did you move to Denmark?
– In the beginning of the 90’s I worked at the YMCA in Norrköping and in 1992 we arrange the YMCA Sports Game. I was guide for the Danish delegation and they convinced me to start talking to the volley club in Ikast, where they was searching for a new women’s coach – I got a one year leave from my work to try it out. Some people never get on, I have now been coaching in the same town and the same club for 28 years – maybe a record of its own 😊

Mats, lÀngst till höger, med ett av ungdomslandslagen frÄn Danmark

What is your background as player?
– I played my first official game in 1976 and my last in 2004 maybe. First in KFUM Örnsköldsvik (76-80), then Änget VBK (80-89), on to KFUM Norrköping (89-93) and finally Ikast KFUM (93-04). In Änget we played in what was called “Allsvenskan” and we tried a couple of times to reach the top league without any luck. A stabile meatball setter with good hands and no block!

And what is your background as coach?
– I started coaching women in 1977 in Ö-vik and have coached women and girls ever since. 1980 we started with youth practice in Änget and of course also kept on doing that ever since. Men’s coaching has not been that much – 4 years in Änget, 3 years in Norrköping, 1 year in Jönköping and 2 years in Ikast. 1990-1992 I was assisting coach for Swedens National Boys Youth Team and from 1996 I have been working with developing Denmarks National Girls Youth Teams and the talentwork behind that and again I am still doing that 😊

Which Teams and you coaching right now?
– Right now I am assistant in Ikast for our 1st division team. I am coaching our local youth girls under 17 and under 20 years. I am one of the coaches in the Talentcenter Vest, where we do camps in holliday periods. In October I was with the U19 NEVZA Team to Finland, in December it was the U17 CEV Qualification Team in Denmark and in May I am going to Serbia with the U20 to try to qualify for the CEV Championship. I also work at the Ikast Sport School (www.isi.dk), a boarding school for 9th and 10th grade. We train four times a week in the scheme plus the practice in the club – close to a professional environment together with their education

You are also working with a company that import whisky and rum to Denmark?
– Back in 1996 we had a visit from the YMCA of Scotland. They was of course introduced to the range of whisky we had in Denmark and they told us, that everything here is exported because they wouldn’t drink it themselves back home! This was a trigger for me and 3 of my volley friends. We started an import business in 1996 and have developed it every year since. We were lucky to just slip into the whisky wave with Deerstalker and Ben Nevis. After a couple of year we introduced Denmark to premium rum, Ron Zacapa and Ron Millonario, which became a new lucky wave for us – this rum wave hasn’t stopped yet! Late 00’s we fall into the gin which was growing very fast. We like to say that we started the pink gin wave with Warner’s Rhubarb Gin! Now we have 20 employees and are selling about 600 different products and a total of 300.000 bottles every year! We have our own rum brand – Rum Nation and are selling that worldwide. Feel free everyone – come and visit us if you are in Denmark – www.macy.dk 😊

Are there any big differences between the Swedish and the Danish Federations regarding how they work with youth and juniors?
– When I came in 1993 there were many differences. Today there’s not many left. I think one is that in Sweden you always will be more disciplined and somehow more believe in authority than here.
When starting in Denmark I found out that the Swedish structure in technique and tactic could hide less talented players in the team by letting them do few things when played. But at the same time I experienced the Danish learning by playing produced some very competitive and complete players whom was very diverse in their play. During the years I believe both sides have developed the other side and that we at the moment work similar with the youth development

What is important for you as coach to implement in the Team year after year?
– Internal motivation – motivation to learn – embrace challenges – it is all about the effort – learn how to train (kids) – learn how to compete (youth) – learn how to win (adults)

What is your coaching philosophy?
I do not want to make the decision about how good a player can be – therefore I have to provide options for everyone to reach their full potential – means learning effective techniques and develop good tactical knowhow – not working for the moment – Work on Long Term Development (LTD).
Always value  the effort more than the results

If you look at yourself as coach, what do you think your biggest strengths are?
– I do believe that I am capable to go for the win but still maintain the focus in learning. In that way I can coach them in a constructive way and have them build up an internal motivation that they want to learn to get better and to learn new things. I think one of my strengths are holding on to the Growth Mindset Theory in every aspect of coaching

If you have to choose one or two of your biggest wins over the years, which ones?
– A game I often think about is a final in U17 NEVZA back in 2012, were we beat the home team Finland 3-2 (doesn’t happen that often). An other great moment of victory was when we as the first Danish Girls Youth Team ever qualified for the CEV Championship in 2018 by beating Latvia 3-0 in Copenhagen

For younger coacher that is early in their career, what advice would you give them?
– Being consistent and constructive in your coaching approach – you are in this world to help your players and your team: do that all the time, no matter what (inspired by Carl McGown).
Teach your players to see the situation (Read) – to take good decisions (Decide) – to perform the skill at their best (Do it) – teach them in this order and keep your focus on this all the time (inspired by John Kessel).
Read “Growth Mindset” by Carol Dweck and “GRIT” by Angela Duckworth – they are mind changing inspiration (inspired by Fred Sturm).

What do you think is the Danish Volleyballs biggest strengths right now?
A good system for long-term developing of volleyball players outside the clubs and open for everyone to participate in – starts with local activities in “The School of Volley”, then regional in Talent Center East & Vest and finally national in Talent Center Danmark.
The combination of experienced leaders and trainers and young enthusiastic coaches.
Continuously participating in CEV and NEVZA tournaments, will allow us to work strategic with the long-term developing of our players

Thank you Mats for your time and good luck with the volleyball season

What are your goals with your volleyball?
– Fulfill my potential, become the best possible volleyball player that I can. I am dreaming about playing in a good club in France and see where it takes me from there

BIP Star đŸ’„ Matthew Aubrey

Australia National Team 2021, Matthew Aubrey #31

Dagens intervju i BIP StarsđŸ’„ Ă€r med tvĂ„an i poĂ€ngligan i Elitserien, Matt Aubrey frĂ„n Australien. Matt spelar sin andra sĂ€song i Sverige och har bĂ„da sĂ€songerna har han representerat Floby VK.

Who is Matthew Aubrey?
– I’m from Brisbane, Australia. I’m 24 years old. I started playing volleyball at school when I was 15. Before I switched to volleyball full-time, I also played basketball and rugby. Before starting my professional career in Sweden, I studied and played volleyball in Canada for 4 years

Why did you choose to play for Floby and the Swedish Elitserien?
– Honestly, I think it was more Floby chose me. I didn’t have a lot of options as I was looking for my first professional contract. However, I liked the idea of the challenge Floby provided being a part of a team returning to the Elitserien after an extended absence and trying to make a big impact on the league. I also spoke to other Australians who have played in Sweden, and I heard nothing but good remarks about the league which helped with my decision to play for Floby

How did you get in contact with your current agent?
It was one of the coaches I had back in Australia that got me in contact with Tony as I had decided that I didn’t want to return to Canada and wanted to start my professional volleyball career

You have now been in Sweden for 1,5 years. What are your experience and thoughts about Sweden as country?
– I really enjoy living in Sweden, I have tried to spend a lot of time getting out and exploring this country as I love travelling and want to make the most it my time here. I really like the Swedish culture and the way of life here

And what are your thoughts about the Swedish Elitserien?
– The Swedish Elitserien is a good competitive league. All the teams are pretty equal this season with the exception of the top two teams, so it makes it good for competitive matches which can be both fun and frustrating. There are a lot of good players in this league which raises the quality of the game and requires you to play your best volleyball every match

Are there any specific things or food that you are missing from Australia?
– Probably the weather, especially this time of year as I see on social media everyone at home outside enjoying the warm sunny weather whilst its freezing cold and snowing here

What is the best with Sweden?
– The best thing about Sweden would have to be the people. I don’t think I have ever had a bad interaction with anyone during my time here. Everyone is so nice and go out of their way to help you

Floby 2021-22

And of course, what is the best with Floby?
– The best thing about Floby would definitely be my teammates. They are a super nice bunch of people. Everyone I have meet in Floby have been really welcoming and friendly which is great because it is such a small town

Are there any things that really impressed or surprised you about Sweden?
– The thing that surprised me about Sweden was everyone’s doubts in their English ability. Whenever I meet someone for the first time, they always claim that they can’t speak English, yet they can understand everything I say perfectly

What are your goals with your volleyball?
– My goals with volleyball are to continue to develop my game both physically and mentally so that I can be a real well rounded strong opposite. My goal is to play in some of the top volleyball leagues such as Italy and Poland and that I can continue to play for the national team so that I can achieve my life goal of going to the Olympics

You played with the Australian National Team last season, which has a big program and is a very good National Team. What did you learn from last summer and what are the things you are working on to improve?
– I learnt a lot in my short time with the national team last summer. The main thing I learnt was that you need to be confident and mentally strong, and you need to turn adversity into opportunity. You must make the most of every opportunity you get as you never know if you will get that opportunity again. I am working on improving my consistency and my all-round volleyball game. I know what to expect with the national team now, so it is now about showing up and proving to everyone why I deserve to be there

What are the goals this season with Floby?
– The goal this season with Floby is that we want to be in the Top 6 at the end of the regular season. I believe that this is something that we can achieve as we had a strong first half just missing out on qualifying for GP. Personally, my goal for this season was to improve my consistency from match to match compared to last season and be a dominate player in the league

What are your plans for the Summer of 2022?
– I don’t have any concrete plans for the summer yet, but I hope to be involved with the national team and the Volleyball Nations League again. I will probably head back to Australia at some point also, but I haven’t thought that far ahead yet

Thank you Matt and good luck in the Spring Season with Floby

Who is Dalen Instenes?
My name is Dalen Instenes and I am an Outside Hitter from the United States. I was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin to a family of four. My father: Doug mother: Kim and older sister: Lauren and of course our dog: Copper.

What is your volleyball background?
-I started playing volleyball when I was 14 years old. I was first introduced to the game through my mom and sister. My sister played volleyball in middle school (grades 6-8 in the US). I played some volleyball in middle school gym class and thought it was fun, but the sport I loved was still (American) Football. It wasn’t until I went to one of my sisters tournaments where I saw men’s volleyball and how fast passed it was and that is where I drew more interest in the sport.

I played in high school and was able to get a Division 1 college scholarship to play volleyball at Lewis University. There we were one of the top teams 10 in the United States all 5 years I was there. In 2019 winning our conference championship and making it to the Final 4.

After I graduated college this was the year that COVID really took a hit. There wasn’t much opportunity to play volleyball so I began coaching. I helped coach a Division 3 college name Carthage college for 1 season. That season we went undefeated with a record of 22-0 and won the National Championship. In the offseason I also play for Team Pineapple in the new professional league in the United States called the Volleyball League of America

Why did you choose to play for Floby and the Swedish Elitserien?
– I chose to play for Floby VK because of the reputation of the Swedish Elitserien. In the USA Sweden has a good reputation for taking care of their foreign players and also providing a high level of play. I have had many friends come play in Sweden and loved it. I was able to talk to Floby about the opportunity to come play here and it seemed like a great fit. Many of the players currently on the team also reached out to me about how they were excited to have me and if I had any questions to let them know. That was also a reason I chose Floby

What is your impression of Sweden after a fall here?
– I enjoy Sweden it is a lot like where I grew up in Wisconsin. The weather is pretty similar so that wasn’t hard to get used to. Everyone I have come across in Sweden has been very respectful and friendly which is very nice to have being a foreigner and not speaking the language

What do you think about the Swedish Elitserie?
– I think the Elitserie is a great place to play. There are a lot of talented players here and able to compete at a high level. This year I have found there is a lot more teams battling for spots which is good to see. That means the league is growing and getting better. I also think there is opportunity for this league to expand which is great for the sport worldwide

How do you evaluate the halfway of the season with Floby VK?
– I think everyone is finding out that Floby VK is a team you cannot look past. We have proved that we are one of the top teams in this league and we will continue to prove that in the weeks to come. I think you can see the strides that Floby VK has taken just in one year and we have started to figure out what works best for us and how to play as a team and most importantly win

How is life in Floby?
– Life in Floby is good. It is a small town so you have to make your fun and explore. The guys on the team are great and are always there to help out or have a good time. I try to get out and explore other cities as much as I can as well which is great. In the US it is not easy or cheap to get around unless you have a car. But here I can easily hop on a bus or train and go anywhere

Are there any specific things or food that you are missing from USA?
– This is a GREAT question. The guys will make fun of me for saying this but the biggest thing I missed right away was ranch! We put ranch on everything in the US but here it isn’t the same. Good thing I have a great family and they sent me some haha. But the food I miss most is probably Chipotle. It is one of my favorite restaurants. I just haven’t found anything that can match it here!

Who will win the NC men’s volleyball championship 2022 in USA?
– This is a tough one. Of course I have to say my boys back at Lewis will get it done. But, if not I think this year is going to be an interesting year in the NCAA. A lot of teams lost their 5th and 6th (COVID) year guys. So there will be many new faces out on the court for many teams. I could see Hawaii making another run at the Championship they have always been a really tough team to beat and bring in some great players from overseas

What are your goals with your volleyball?
– I am currently living out my goal for volleyball. My goal has always been to improve and make that next step. Whether it was in high school getting better to make the varsity team, in college to make the starting roster, and now to become a professional player overseas. And now it is to help my teammates and Floby VK make a run at a Swedish Eliteserie Gold Medal

What are your plans for the Summer of 2022?
My biggest and most exciting plan this summer is getting married to my fiancĂ© Haley. We are so excited to be able to finally start our lives together and we cannot be more happy. Besides that I will to play volleyball for Team Pineapple in the Volleyball League of America for the summer!

Thank you Dalen and good luck in the Spring Season with Floby
